Template vs. Custom Website: What Actually Gets Contractors Leads
Published Sep 26, 20266 min read

Contractors often start with a cheap template. That is rational. The question is when the template stops being enough.
When a template is fine
- You need something live this week
- You have one service and one city
- You will invest time in GBP and reviews yourself
- Budget is the hard constraint this year
When custom wins
- You offer many services across several areas
- Competitors already rank with stronger sites
- You need conversion paths templates do not include (quote flows, emergency CTAs, portfolio filters)
- You want local SEO structured into the information architecture from day one
The real metric
Aesthetics are secondary. Leads are the metric: calls, form fills, booked estimates. If your template site is pretty and silent, you do not have a design problem. You have a discovery and conversion problem.
